Digital Marketing Basics for Small Biz in WA

Digital Marketing: Where to Start?

If you’re a small business in WA, digital marketing can help you find new customers, stay connected with existing ones, and build your brand online; even if you’re working with a small budget or short on time.

So here’s a simple guide to getting started with digital marketing!

Start with a website that works

Your website is your digital shopfront. Make sure it’s:

  • Easy to navigate

  • Mobile-friendly (most people browse on their phones!)

  • Clear about what you offer and how to contact you

A slow or confusing site can turn people away before they even get in touch. SBDC’s Build a Website booklet is a great place to start!

Get found on Google (SEO)

SEO stands for “search engine optimisation.” In simple terms, it means making your website easier to find on Google.

A few ways to start:

  • Use keywords your customers might type (e.g. “Mandurah lawn mowing” or “vegan café Fremantle”)

  • Write helpful content like blog posts or service pages

  • Make sure each page has a clear title and description

You don’t need to be an expert. SBDC’s digital marketing page breaks it down nicely.

Show up on the right social platforms

You don’t need to be on every platform, just the ones your audience actually uses.

  • Facebook and Instagram are great for most local businesses

  • LinkedIn is ideal if you’re in a professional or B2B space

  • TikTok or Pinterest may work if you’re in creative or visual industries

Share useful content, behind-the-scenes updates, offers, or just reminders that you’re here and open for business. If you need help getting started, you can check out the Getting Started on Social Media guide from the SBDC.

Use Email to stay connected

Email marketing is still one of the best ways to reach your customers, especially the loyal ones.

What to send:

  • Updates and news

  • Special offers

  • Helpful tips or content

Just remember: under the Spam Act 2003, you need permission to send marketing emails! The SBDC’s email marketing guide can help you build your list the right way.

Try paid aids (even on a small budget)

Google ads and Facebook/Instagram ads let you target the exact people you want to reach by location, interests, age and more.

  • Start small (even $50 can be enough for a test run)

  • Track your results and adjust based on what’s working

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment (it’s how you learn!)

If you want to learn more, the Digital Marketing Essentials workshop by the SBDC is a great way to build confidence with ads.

Focus on what makes sense for your business and stay consistent. If you ever feel stuck, there’s help available.
